Tim Cook talks to Colbert about Steve Jobs, the new iPhone and coming out

Apple chief executive Tim Cook dropped by "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" Tuesday night, joining Colbert for a short but wide-ranging conversation on Apple, Steve Jobs and Cook's own personal life.

Colbert oohed and aahed over the features in the newest iPhone 6s Plus, showing off Apple's Force Touch and Live Photos on a rose gold model. But he also gave Cook a bit of a hard time.

After cracking some jokes about autocorrect and Apple's short upgrade cycle in his monologue, Colbert also asked Cook if the company had changed the charger for its phone again — joking that, if so, "I will stab you in the neck with a fondue fork." (Luckily for Cook, the new phone still has the same charger. His neck is safe.)

Colbert also broached more serious subjects in the short interview. He asked Cook how the chief executive feels about biographies about his predecessor, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, and their often unflattering portrayals of the controversial executive.

Cook said that he hasn't seen these films — "Steve Jobs, " starring Michael Fassbender, comes out next month — but said that he sees some of the material out there as "people trying to be opportunistic."

"The Steve I knew was an amazing human being, " Cook said. "He had this uncanny ability to see around the corner."

Colbert also asked Cook about his decision to come out as gay, asking if his own experiences have informed Apple's growing involvement in community efforts and relatively new charitable giving programs — initiatives spearheaded by Cook and seen as one of the early hallmarks of his tenure at the company.

Cook said that he is driven to do more for others, citing a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr., who said, "life's most persistent and urgent question is 'What are you doing for others?'"
